Tutorial
The Lebanon School District manages student academic information with a Student Information System called PowerSchool.
Your child's teacher uses a companion grading software package called PowerGrade which acts as their personal grade book allowing them to record grades and attendance - which in turn updates the main school database.
Gaining Access to the PowerSchool Web Site
Since the PowerSchool web site is secure, you will need to obtain and install a security certificate for your web browser. The following web site contains detailed instructions on how to do this: http://www.iu13.org/tech/certs. Installation of this security certificate must be done before accessing PowerSchool for the first time.
Open your web browser and point to the following URL: https://powerschool.lebanon.k12.pa.us/public. If you are successful, you will see the following web page:

Figure 1.
Enter your assigned Username and Password in the spaces as indicated and then click Enter. NOTE: Upper and lower case is not important.
When you have successfully logged in to PowerSchool, you will see the following web page as it relates to your child.

Figure 2.
The menu bar at the top of the page allows you to select various data related to your child's academics and attendance.
Grades and Attendance
The Grades and Attendance screen (Figure 2.) will always be the first screen you see. Included in the data available from this screen are demographics, attendance, current grades and historical grades.
The screen is divided into two sections. The leftmost section displays the last two weeks of attendance. The center section displays your child's grades for the current and previous academic quarters (Q1, Q2, Q3, Q4) of the school year as well as the final grades (F1) for the completed courses. The rightmost section displays your child's attendance summary for the current academic quarter. Since attendance is recorded at the beginning and end of the school day, the attendance totals at the bottom of the screen can be misleading. As an example, look at Figure 2, the student has been absent one full day this quarter and since the morning and afternoon attendance period is recorded, the attendance totals show two absences.
One of the most powerful features of the PowerSchool web environment is the ability to interact with the data and find out more information. Any text on the web page that is blue in color indicates that there is more data associated with that text. Clicking on the blue text allows you to view more detailed information.
By clicking on the blue text links, you can:
- Click on a teacher's name and email that teacher a question.
- Click on a count of absences or tardies and see the actual dates and reasons.
- Click on a grade and see the assignments, which are included in its calculation.
- You cannot damage or change any data when you click on these blue links, so you may browse through all available data.

Figure 3.
Notice, as shown in Figure 3, when you click on a class score (blue text), there is a notation at the bottom of the screen that reads, "Grades last updated on xx/xx/2005". This is the last time the teacher updated this grade in their grade book.

Grades History Screen
You may be interested in seeing more data then as shown on the Grades and Attendance screen. The next option in the menu bar is Grades History. This screen is shown below.

Figure 4.
This screen allows you to view your child's academic grade history for this school year. Grades are listed in the order they were recorded. Exam grades are listed first for courses where they have been given. Final grades (F1) are listed next for courses that have ended. Following final grades are the grade for each completed academic quarter (Q1, Q2, Q3, Q4) this school year. Remember that you can always click on the blue text to further explore a data item.
Attendance History Screen
The Attendance History screen provides additional detailed attendance for the current academic quarter. Figure 5 shows a table with each course listed in a downward column and each date of school listed across in a row.
The column "Expression" indicates the cycle day and period the class meets. An example would be 1(1-6), which means the course meets during period 1 on cycle days 1 through 6. Any dots or dashes in the blocks indicate that there was no school for that day.
At the bottom of the attendance history screen is a legend describing the various attendance codes used. Common codes are "E" for excused absence, "U" for unexcused absence, etc.

Email Notification
Clicking on Email Notification from the menu bar allows you to tell PowerSchool to send you email notifications of various information at intervals you specify. Refer to Figure 6 to see options associated with email notifications. You can enter several email addresses if more than one person is to receive the update. Be sure to separate the addresses with a comma.

Teacher Comments
The Teacher Comments menu option allows you to see comments about your child that teachers have included in their grade book. These are the same comments that print on your child's report card. Notice that teacher's names are in blue text. You can click a teacher's name and send email to them if you wish.
We hope you enjoy using the PowerSchool Student Information System. If you have any questions about using the system not covered by this document or are having trouble logging into the web page, you may contact Lebanon School District Technical Support at the email address: powerschool@lebanon.k12.pa.us.
